Objectives of the Special Session
This special session aims to enhance delegates’ understanding of the critical role that traditional institutions play in achieving good land governance in Africa. Building on presentations by traditional leaders during the plenary session, the session will highlight the importance of merging modernity with tradition to develop effective land management systems that respect local values. Our objectives are to educate and raise awareness among participants about the vital role of traditional institutions, promote acceptance and support for land management systems that integrate traditional values and modern practices, identify current and potential threats, and stimulate constructive dialogue to develop strategies for promoting traditional values in land governance.
Aim of the Session
Our aim is to create collective awareness about the need to connect modernity with tradition to achieve sustainable land governance in Africa. By developing a consensus on the benefits of land management systems that blend traditional practices with modern approaches, we hope to establish a solid foundation for land administration that respects and incorporates local customs while meeting contemporary demands.
Expected Outcomes
The expected outcomes of this special session are significant and varied. We anticipate that participants will become more aware and familiar with the role of traditional institutions in land governance, that new partnerships will be forged between traditional leaders, government officials, and other stakeholders, and that committed leaders will emerge to advocate for and spread the initiatives of integrated land governance throughout their communities and beyond. These alliances will be crucial in promoting the session’s mission at various levels and achieving a sustainable, interconnected, peaceful, and prosperous Africa.
