The Post #COP28 workshop, focusing on the significance of youth-centered land governance in climate discussions, is presently underway in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from March 20th to 22nd, 2024.

On the first day of the meeting, from March 20th to 22nd, the Post COP28 Workshop is taking place in Yaoundé, Cameroon, where experts and decision-makers gather to closely examine the immediate challenges posed by climate change in Africa. This meeting underscores the urgent need for concerted action to address the current impacts of climate change on the continent’s lands and highlights the crucial role of youth in seeking sustainable solutions.

YILAA – BENIN

Organized by the Youth and Land Multi-Stakeholder Platform in Africa (YLMPA), this event seeks to highlight the critical role of youth in shaping land governance strategies within the context of climate change.

The evidence presented at the event emphasized that climate change is not just a future concern; it is happening now, impacting soil quality, causing more severe floods, and exacerbating droughts across the continent. These effects directly contribute to poverty and land tenure insecurity, underlining the immediate need for action. During the workshop’s opening session, the importance of inclusive and sustainable climate policies, particularly for indigenous communities, was stressed. It is evident that young women and men are disproportionately affected by climate change and land degradation. Therefore, any effective strategy must prioritize their involvement and empowerment.

An intergenerational approach emerged as a central theme, highlighting the significance of youth participation at all levels of decision-making. Discussions emphasized that addressing climate change and land governance issues without considering youth perspectives is incomplete and unsustainable.

In conclusion, the workshop underscored the pivotal role of youth in advancing youth-centered land governance initiatives in climate conservation. It is imperative that we continue to engage openly, fostering dialogue and innovation. I express my gratitude to all participants and supporters, recognizing that there is still much to learn and accomplish as we work together towards a more sustainable future.
