The International Organization Youth Initiative for Land in Africa (YILAA), in partnership with ACE4ES and with the active support of ANYAN ONG, a youth association dedicated to facilitating agroecological activities, delivered a significant training restitution on the adoption of agroecological technologies. This took place in four villages of the Nikki commune, Benin – from March 27 to 31, 2025: Suya, Bouca Néré, Dè Gando, and Soumarou. This strategic initiative aimed to strengthen the capacities of women market gardeners and rural youth through sustainable agricultural practices, emphasizing the reduction of Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (SLCPs) and the production of organic fertilizers. The event was marked by the presence of the Head of the Suya Arrondissement, demonstrating strong support from local authorities.
Constructive Exchanges and Strong Commitments
Throughout the sessions, participants actively engaged with the various stages of the agroecological training. A strong emphasis was placed on good agricultural practices designed to mitigate the impact of SLCPs – a critical issue in combating climate change and enhancing agricultural yields. The training also delved into practical methods for producing organic fertilizers, offering tangible solutions for improved soil health and productivity.
Beneficiaries across all villages expressed great satisfaction with the knowledge and skills acquired. They collectively committed to sharing these new insights within their communities and, crucially, to implementing them directly in their agricultural operations.
YILAA and ANYAN ONG: Catalysts for Change
In each village, the women market gardeners’ cooperatives warmly applauded the initiative, particularly recognizing the upstream efforts of YILAA (Young Initiative for Land in Africa). Their work was significantly bolstered by the engagement of ANYAN ONG, a youth association dedicated to facilitating the sector’s activities.
Mr. Salomon HOUNDJO, YILAA’s Ambassador for Agroecology and Circular Economy, provided brilliant presentations and clarifications on the various methods and instructions for using the agroecological technologies. His clear explanations were met with enthusiastic approval from the attendees, who bravely demonstrated their commitment by making land available for experimental plots.
Concrete Solutions for Enhanced Productivity
Following the session with the women’s group in Suya, the focus shifted to Dè Gando, another village in Nikki. Here, the restitution highlighted the practical production of organic fertilizer using cow dung, water, and cow urine – an effective composition proven to enhance agricultural productivity.
This comprehensive restitution program across the four villages marks a significant step forward in integrating young farmers into the agroecological transition in Nikki. It powerfully demonstrates the shared interest of local authorities, communities, and organizations like YILAA and ANYAN ONG in fostering innovative solutions for agricultural resilience and environmental sustainability.
