The training workshop organized by Youth Initiative for Land in Africa (YILAA) during the 2023 World Day to Combat Desertification brought together 40 young women from Benin. With the theme “Woman: her land, her rights,” the workshop highlighted the impact of desertification on women. The objective was to enhance their knowledge of land rights, promote sustainable agricultural techniques to combat desertification, and encourage networking.
The event opened with inspiring speeches from YILAA Coordinator, Innocent Antoine HOUEDJI, and Charles BALOGOUN, the African representative in the panel of accredited NGOs under the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification
(UNCCD).
The training comprised three sessions. The first, led by Dr. Charlotte ALLE, addressed women’s land rights, emphasizing their crucial role in land management despite facing obstacles. The second session, facilitated by Colonel Désiré Ogou HOUNGBO, covered agricultural techniques for reforestation and desertification prevention. The third session, presented by Innocent Antoine HOUEDJI, discussed mechanisms for women’s access to rural lands.
Results showed participants gained in-depth understanding of land rights, sustainable agricultural techniques, and strategies for accessing rural lands. Engaging discussions followed, highlighting innovative solutions like biogas utilization and intensive
reforestation. The methodology included a call to organizations, identification, and selection of committed participants in relevant fields, all supervised by YILAA’s International Coordination.
