Background
The 2022-2030 ILC strategy focuses on overcoming power asymmetries by shifting power back to people’s organizations, attention to land rights and focus on data-driven advocacy for accountability. By enabling spaces for dialogue, learning and capacity building, ILC seeks to amplify people’s organization’s voices, especially those of youth and women, fostering collective action to achieve meaningful change and enabling inclusive decision making over land and resources.
The Youth and Land Multi-stakeholder Platform (YLMPA), hosted by YILAA (ILC member in Benin) is one of ILC’s priorities in Africa. The YLMPA promotes youth-centered land governance in the region by involving youth in shaping land reforms, facilitating peer-learning and exchange, and connecting and mobilizing youth engagement and representation in land governance processes at all levels in Africa.
Regional learning exchange
Under YLMPA’s implementation, ILC and YILAA are organizing a regional learning exchange in March 2023 in Benin gathering 10 youth representatives from 7 African countries (list below). The exchange brings ILC/YLMPA youth together to learn from each other and from local experiences on how youth are taking action to achieve land rights in Africa, to develop and improve tools for more effective advocacy (including land mapping and data production/use), and strengthen collaboration ties to address the main challenges they face in accessing land and protecting their territories.
During the regional exchanges, participants will :
- Connect with each other, strengthen the Africa youth network and identify possible common actions
- Interact with ILC and YILAA’s national and regional partners (local communities, local youth, international organizations, government, academia), and learn from their work and experience
- Harvest and share lessons of the ILC youth fellowship 2021-22, and familiarize with fellows solutions to specific challenges in Africa (action plans)
- Strengthen knowledge and strategies and acquire practical skills and tools to use and produce bottom-up data such as participatory land mapping
- Learn about YILAA’s experience in cultivating a regional youth network to promote young people’s land rights and empowerment
- Document and disseminate experiences
