Yilaa_Somalia_New: Mr. Hassan A Osman, a member of Youth Initiative for Land in Africa (YILAA) Somalia and My_Land_is_My_Life organizatio, participated in a five-day high-level knowledge exchange workshop organized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Somalia, held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The event brought together key stakeholders, including Lieutenant General H.E. Bashir jama Mohamed, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Somalia; the Deputy, senior officials; the Regional Head of WMO; Somalia’s Permanent Representative to the WMO, Dr. Guuleid Artan; and members of the Parliamentary_Committee on Environment and Natural_Resources.
As part of the program, participants visited the Institute_for_Meteorological_Training_and_Research (IMTR) – WMO Regional_Training_Centre (RTC) in Nairobi. The delegation received detailed briefings on the Kenya Meteorological Department’s systems for data collection, early warning, forecasting, and climate_project implementation.
The workshop focused on reviewing and refining the draft Meteorology and Climate Bill, aimed to establishing Somalia’s National Meteorological and Climate Services Agency (SNMA). The bill, endorsed by the Council of Ministers in 2023, is currently before the House of the People for ratification.
Mr. Hassan contributed to the discussions on integrating community-level and youth perspectives into the national climate governance, climate resilience, and early warning policy frameworks. The event marked a significant step forward in strengthening Somalia’s institutional capacity for science-based weather and climate services.
